Green Tea - we all have seen celebrities and influencers promoting it and going GAGA over the numerous benefits of drinking Green tea. But, is it really beneficial for us?

Green tea is derived from the Camellia sinensis plant and it has its origins in Yunnan city of China. It is considered as one of the healthiest beverages in the world. It is also used for various medicinal purposes.

Green tea promotes heart health, as per a research published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2011), drinking green tea reduces LDL. Catechins in green tea makes it beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Promotes Weight loss

Green tea contains catechins and caffeine that are known to boost metabolism an aid in weight loss. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity (2009) found that green tea extract can enhance fat oxidation and improve insulin sensitivity, potentially aiding in weight loss efforts.


 

Cognitive abilities and brain health

Consuming green tea tends to improve your cognitive abilities and brain health during a course of time. Green Tea contains both caffeine and L - Theanine, both when combinedly used are known to improve the cognitive functions as per a research conducted in 2019.

It also improves brain health by reducing stress and protecting from many neurodegenerative diseases.

As mentioned above Green tea contains an amino acid known as L - Theanine which helps in relieving stress, improves focus and promotes good sleep.An article published in the  journal Trends in Food Science & Technology (2019), highlights the potential of L-theanine in mitigating stress and anxiety.

Green tea contains compounds called polyphenols that helps the body in boosting the digestion process.

Green tea is anti inflammatory in nature. Inflammation at times leads to various ailments like cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, etc. Antioxidants present in Green Tea helps to reduce the inflammation.

Diabetes Management

Green tea plays a very vital role in managing diabetes. In 2022, a study was conducted in Ohio State University on 40 participants and the results showed the fasting sugar level of all the participants were lower who took Green tea as compared to the other compound that was given.

Consuming as well as applying green tea on skin have innumerable benefits. It helps to reduce acne, prevents premature aging, reduces the puffiness, nourishes, hydrates and protects the skin.


 

So Green tea has lots and lots of benefits for us, ranging from digestion to skin care. But green tea is not an alternative to having healthy meals, working out and medical treatment. Plus have it in moderation as excess of anything is bad.
