A liver abscess is a localized collection of pus within the liver, caused by infection — usually bacterial (pyogenic) or amoebic (Entamoeba histolytica).
⚠️ Common Signs and Symptoms
🧍♀️ General Symptoms
Fever and chills (often high-grade)
Malaise and fatigue
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
🏥 Local (Liver-related) Symptoms
Right upper quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain
Dull, aching, sometimes referred to right shoulder (due to diaphragm irritation)
Tender hepatomegaly (painful enlarged liver on examination)
Jaundice (in some cases)
Nausea and vomiting
🦠 Amoebic Liver Abscess Specific Signs
Usually in young adult males
History of dysentery or amoebic infection
Single large abscess, often in right lobe of liver
Milder jaundice compared to bacterial abscess
🧫 Pyogenic (Bacterial) Liver Abscess Specific Signs
Elderly or diabetics more affected
Often multiple abscesses
High fever with chills and rigors
Marked leukocytosis (↑ WBC count)
⚠️ Complications (if untreated)
Rupture into pleural cavity, peritoneum, or pericardium
Septicemia (blood infection)
Empyema (pus in pleural space)
